How to Get Holiday Traffic from Pinterest

Riken Maharjan

Is Pinterest holiday traffic on your list of things to conquer in 2023?

Yep, I know the buzz around Pinterest traffic right now. I know for some biz owners, traffic is kicking some A. For others, they're doing the same thing they've always done but the traffic is still dropping.

I don't have the exact answer (and no, neither do my Pinterest reps). All I can say is to stay the course… and to try a few more things that you probably didn't do as much last year.

1. Make more seasonal images to pin.

No this isn't new news. Pinterest wants more fresh content in 2019, whether it's sharing a new blog post or making new pins. They basically got tired of the same pins over and over being served to pinners.

If you've got new content that's holiday focused, make at least 3 pins for that content. Only have products? Make some pins that go to popular product categories (yup, bloggers can do this with blog content too). Have time to make 10 pins for some of the most popular content? Go for it!

For any existing content, what are your typical holiday hits? Capitalize on their success and make more pins for those! Templates can save you loads of time, letting you churn out a new pin in minutes.

2. Create more boards so you can pin content more often.

With Pinterest wanting more fresh content in 2019, this essentially means they want to see a pin less frequently. In the “old” days, we could pin over and over to the same board, but Pinterest has told us through Tailwind that they want our content being pinned to the same boards less often (no there's no magic formula, but we do layout some guidelines in Pinning Perfect).

While this doesn't mean you need hundreds of boards, it does mean you might need to expand the number of relevant boards you can save a pin to. For the holidays, you might have a general Christmas board, then boards for more specific seasonal topics you cover. Those holiday pins can also go on non-holiday boards too. For example, an appetizer recipe could go in a general Christmas board, a holiday party board, a holiday food board, then some non-holiday food boards.

Take a look at your holiday content and see what new boards you could create. Also, look for more evergreen board opportunities!

And don't forget your board descriptions! If you need keyword ideas, grab the holiday keyword guide and use these in your board descriptions and your pins.

3. Understand the types of holiday shoppers on Pinterest (and any other holiday knowledge bombs that Pinterest drops).

Each holiday season, Pinterest gives business owners loads of tips and insights to help you succeed on Pinterest. They post the content on their business blog, offer webinars, and even have a separate section just for the holidays! While the section hasn't been updated for 2019 yet, there's still a lot of content you can use right this minute.

One section I love is the Festive Four – these are archetypes of holiday shoppers that come to Pinterest. Here's an example:

Now, if you're looking at example thinking, “I don't write about food,” then look harder. The Time-Saver wants shortcuts. They want convenience. A travel blogger could write about awesome gifts that fit in your carry-on. Or ways to save time at the airport during the holidays. A beauty blogger might write about 5-minute looks for a holiday party. See where I'm going with this?

You could also create pins targeting whichever of the Festive Four are relevant for a particular post. For a Time-Saver, a recipe might be presented as easy to make. For The Planner (another archetype), you might make a pin saying that recipe will impress their guests.

Lots of possibilities!
