Babel Audio pays people to make small talk with strangers on camera
It pairs you with whoever else is online, you both pick a topic from a list, then you chat for a few minutes.
The recordings get licensed to AI companies teaching voice assistants to sound like real people.
Babel is run by David AI, an audio data startup valued at $500M in 2025.
A long-time contributor, ryanvango, shared a guide to getting in, starting with the pay…
it pays $50 per recorded hour right now, sometimes more if you have a bonus running… The “effective pay” works out to around $20-$30 depending how efficient you are with deliberation and whatnot.
Deliberation = you and your partner choosing a topic, which is unpaid.
The catch is the audio check, which picks up everything…
Me, I have my blanket fort and I even unplug my mini fridge because my mic is too sensitive and can hear it…
People have gotten flagged for tummy grumbles.
Flagged calls cut your daily call limit, and enough of them gets you removed from the project
So most of the work is getting a room quiet enough to pass.
The video role is open to people in the US and Canada with a General American accent, a laptop or desktop, and a 720p webcam.
Acceptance is low, so test-record yourself in your quietest room before you apply
